Paella Fest 2019

Saturday, July 27

On the outskirts of beautiful green Eugene

Paella Fest is a benefit for Food For Lane County. Last year's Paella Fest raised over $26,000 through donations and the silent auction.

This will be the 14th year of helping people in the local community with issues of food insecurity while celebrating our passion for paella in the beautiful woods west of Eugene.

Suggested minimum donation to Food For Lane County is $30, but there is no maximum donation. If you would like to make a paella, please contact Don. Space is limited but we will do our best to accommodate all interested makers.

.......  Cheers,  Don

Paella Fest Is an Invitation Only Event: We are a small group of friends who gather in a relatively small backyard with only a fixed amount of paella to go around. Attendance is by invitation only. If you would like to participate, you must seek out one of the makers for a personal invitation.

Music: Thanks to Steve Davis for arranging this year's musical lineup:

  •   Rich The Roving Piper
  •   Char On Guitar
  •   Soccarat Sax Quartet
  •   Justin King
  •   Steve Owens Quintet
  •   String Theory
  •   Martina Flamenco
  •   Meadow Rue
  •   Missoula Flood

Auction: The silent auction has become a popular and lucrative part of Paella Fest. If you have an item or service you would like to donate please contact Sue or Char.

Looking forward to seeing friends, old and new, on July 27, 2019!

A look back to last year’s fest

Other contributors:  Bucks Sanitary Service, Newman's Fish Company, Sundance Natural Foods, La Tienda, Down to Earth Home and Garden, Metropol Bakery, and dozens of individuals who donated items to the auction.

Musicians: Steve Davis for pulling it together, Rich on the pipes, left Coast sax quartet, Justin King, Steve Owen quintet, Kristan Toedtman, Martita and flamenco dancers, Corwin Bolt and the Wing Nuts, String Theory,  the Steves, and the other Steves

Other volunteers:  Thanks to Lisa and the committee of worker bees who scurried about in the weeks before doing all of the little things that add up to an amazing event, and then scurry about afterwards to clean up and attempt to restore the site. A special thanks to Sue for her huge brain, logistical prowess and tirelessness in pulling off the auction.  And of course to Mo and Eric for hosting the event and to Don and Char and their extended family without whom nothing else would happen.

The Concept

Each person (or team) who signs up to be a "paellaera" (paella maker) brings everything they need to prepare their own delicious variation of the renowned dish of Spain out in the woods. In addition each paellaera invites enough friends to eat the equivalent of their paella. The result is a critical mass of fun and celebration as we all sample bites of these colorful and tasty creations. To sign up, see below.

The Location

Eric and Mo have graciously provided their lovely wooded hilltop back yard, located just 20 minutes from downtown Eugene — and to be known for posterity as The Dukhobar Road Paella Proving Grounds — at 86840 Dukhobar Road, Eugene, OR 97403.

Instructions for Paellaeras

Timing

  • Arrival: Paellaeras may arrive and set up any time after 2:00 PM. Feel free to arrive early enough to enjoy a beer with your fellow paella makers.
  • Cooking: You are the expert for your recipe. Begin when the time seems right.
  • Eating: Please aim to have your paella complete and ready to eat as close to 6:30 as you can.

Items Provided

  • Tables (each table can accommodate 2 to 3 paellaeras)
  • Water (although you may want to bring a receptacle to have water at your table)
  • Cups for beverages (feel free to bring your own special goblet)
  • Small plates and spoons for acquiring taste bud orgasms. (Eating out of the pan is the tradition for paella, however to minimize the risk of soccorat theft, we are resorting to plates.)
  • portable toilets

Items Paelleras Should Bring

  • All ingredients
  • Paella Pan
  • Burner and gas, or receptacle and fuel for charcoal or wood heat
  • Utensils
  • Dish towels and pot holders
  • Beverages other than beer (and ice if needed)
  • Chair
  • Containers for taking home leftovers (yeah, right!)
You may want to label items as things tend to migrate around in the feeding frenzy.
Smokey says, "no ground fires, please"

The driveway is steep, so to drop off people or supplies, drive all the way up to the house, staying right at the Y, and then return to the parking area at the bottom of the hill in the marked pasture. There is no parking at the house.

Tips for guests

Items Guests Should Bring
  • Beverages other than beer (and ice if needed)
  • Folding chair so you can relax, visit, eat, listen and enjoy the party
  • Generous donation for Food for Lane County (suggested $30 per person)

Timing, Directions and parking

Paellas should be ready to eat around 6:30, but visitors might want to come around 5 to see what's available in the silent auction, to visit, to scope out the various paellas and talk to the makers, and to enjoy music.

To get to the paella proving grounds, take West 11th to Greenhill Road. Turn left on Greenhill. As you proceed, the name of the road mysteriously changes to Crow Road. In a mile or so there will be a Dukhobar Road sign on the right. DON’T TURN HERE! Continue straight for about half a mile until you see a Dukhobar Road sign on your left. Turn left here. Continue to the end of the pavement. (Click on the map below to enlarge)

There is no parking at the house, but there will be a shuttle for those desiring help to get up the driveway from the parking area at the bottom.
